Puccini’s magnificent achievement with Il trittico was to produce a coherent and overwhelming experience at the theatre with three operas, seemingly on diverse themes, but which have a total emotional impact on the viewer.

These are three one act operas that immerse the viewer in the vicissitudes of life; the heartbreak and tragedy of Suor Angelica, the terror and jealousy of Tabarro’s murder, both of which seem at odds with the comedy of Gianni Schicchi, but that final part of this trio is nevertheless still suffused with the darker side of human nature.

The music is wondrous too, and it is hard to imagine many more potent theatrical experiences.
