Tenor, James Edwards, sings at Darkness to Light

The people of Durham will have the chance to listen to established, international tenor, James Edwards on 18th April at Durham Cathedral. James will sing opposite soprano, Penelope Randall-Davis for InterOpera’s spectacular “Darkness to Light” event in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen Belsen.

A commanding personality on stage, James is a sincere, modest artist with a thrilling voice that continues to mature. He trained under international conductor and repertoire coach, Alistair Dawes at the renowned Covent Garden’s Jette Parker Young Artists programme.
Alistair Dawes, co-founder of InterOpera who was Head of the Music Staff at Covent Garden says : “James is a complete, top quality artist with the finesse, style and quality to knock socks off some. James takes his time to study an opera and can apply his technique and voice to bring an Italianate quality whilst making the most of the narrative.

“InterOpera always present a great quality to our audiences who notice the difference and we are very pleased to bring James back here, following the success of the Will Todd oratorio ‘St Cuthbert’ which marked the return of the Lindisfarne Gospels to Durham in 2013.”
James, who will be singing some well-known operatic pieces, said: “I went to see Anne Frank’s house in Amsterdam in January and felt really touched by her story. One of my adoptive grandparents, Bob Thurgood served in the Navy in World War II, so this event means a lot to me personally.”
Some readers may have read James’ own story in the Sunday Telegraph earlier this year, when he revealed his story of adoption and reunion. He added: “Opera is special. It is more than just music and words.  It’s the only music form in which different and contrasting emotions can be unleashed at the same time. When I perform, I try to deliver what the composer really wanted in terms of emotion and pathos.”
