This is the 50th time that James has sung the role of Pinkerton. The role means a great deal and the opera has a special significance for him. It is not hard to see why. After the emotional intensity of Butterfly's suicide Pinkerton runs onto the stage shouting her name. What are his real emotions? Are they just guilt and regret? Her son has lost his mother and will inevitably be adopted by Pinkerton and his new wife. Traumatic stuff. James understands both the guilt of the parent and the emotional challenges about to face the child.
